On February 12, 2019, the Florida Senate Education Committee approved a bill on a 5-3 vote that would make all teachers eligible for a program that allows them to serve as armed guardians.
The bill expands a law that was passed last year after a former student fatally shot 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
The school guardian program allows school personnel to carry concealed weapons on campus after going through extensive training. Specifically, the proposal would allow school, contract employees, and law enforcement officers to be armed under Florida’s new Guardian Program provided they are appointed by the local district superintendent and approved by the school board.

Most of the two-hour debate focused on the school guardian program; however, the proposal includes several other school safety measures.
Dozens of individuals, including members of the gun-control advocacy group Moms Demand Action, spoke against that part of the proposal.
So we ask: should teachers be allowed to carry an armed weapon for the purpose of protecting their students in the event of a school shooting?
