I was born and raised in Miami, Florida. Over the past thirty-plus years, Miami has grown into a metropolis before my eyes, and very quickly. Miami has grown in culture, food, art, and many other areas that constantly attract more and more people of all ages and backgrounds.

As the buildings keep growing, there are certain parts of the community that are ignored. One area, for example, is the underline areas under the Metrorail, which stretches 24 miles from south to north in the City.
Now, thanks to Meg Daly, founder of the non-profit organization Friends of The Underline, this area will be transformed into something beautiful. Specifically, Friends of the Underline in in the process of transforming the underutilized land “into a 10-mile neighborhood park, multi-modal, world-class, urban trail and canvas for artistic expression to create a safer, healthier, more connected, mobile and engaged community.”

These 10 miles of space beneath the Metrorail will be transformed into a new park and pedestrian path that will connect South Miami, Coral Gables, and downtown Miami. The Underline’s website states, “[t]he Underline will transform the land below Miami’s Metrorail into a 10-mile linear park, urban trail and living art destination.” This area will be accessible to everyone.
After years of fundraising and lobbying, the Underline has a government construction contract, with Miami-Dade commissioners approving a $14 million contract to build the first half-mile of the project off Southwest First Avenue in the Brickell area.
The entire 10-mile Underline park is expected to cost about $120 million to construct, with another $3 million required to maintain it each year.
As of February 2019, the Brickell, Viscaya, and Douglas Road Stations are fully funded. The remaining stations–Coconut Grove, University, South Miami, and Dadeland North and South Stations–are either partially funded or in the progress.
We are looking forward to seeing this transformation!
